…The Eagle Has Landed….. Remember those famous words?
July 16, 1969 was a date that many young people today would not be aware of it’s importance in history. But for some of us, that was date that rocket science took center stage in our lives. Commander Neil Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin were launched into space forever changing how people viewed the moon .
In celebration of the 47 year anniversary of the rocket launch that led to man landing on the moon, Wings Over Miami is presenting Russell F. Romanella, former director of Safety and Mission Assurance at NASA’s John F. Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Mr. Romanella will be hosting a formal presentation at 1:00 pm.
Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Russell comes home to Miami as a guest presenter to answer all your questions about NASA operations and give you an insight into the space program. Included in this link is his biography and the important information that not only was Russell born here, but for all you Southwest Miami neighbors, he graduated from Southwest Senior High School, class of 1976!
Joining Mr. Romanella in the hangar will be veterans from Everglades National Park’s NIKE Missile Site. They will be offering a formal presentation at 11:00 am. This is an encore appearance for the park veterans as they were very well received in the previous visit.
The Nike Hercules Missile Site 69 was part of a larger missile defense system built in South Florida in response to the Cuban Missile Crisis. There were four Nike Hercules missile sites in South Florida with sites from the Monroe County’s Key Largo to the City of Miramar in Broward County.
Also, the Southern Cross Astronomy Society is bringing out their solar viewing equipment, weather permitting. The group will be available to share their activities in South Florida and to invite you to join in their fun!
